Statement

My artistic mission is to weave a compelling narrative that addresses the critical elements of climate change and sustainability, not only encouraging viewers to think and question but ultimately motivating them to take action. At the core of my creative practice lies storytelling, a powerful tool I employ through a multimedia approach to vividly and, at times, ironically or sarcastically, portray our interactions with the Earth and with one another.
My work takes form through printmaking and other multimedia projects. The accessibility and sustainability of printmaking drew me to the medium. The intimate nature of books and scroll-like-prints (I am an avid reader) presents a portal through which to tell a story, and I continue to be inspired by printmaking’s historical development. I mainly work with natural linoleum and wood for carving matrices, and I am exploring the traditional non-toxic watercolor printing technique from Japan, Mokuhanga.
Central to my work is the concept of juxtaposition and scale. Everyday is juxtaposed with the unthinkable, seriousness with fun, and the macro with micro. How can my art fit into an unfamiliar, maybe uncanny, valley? The scale of my work in addition to its content and audience interaction is designed to provoke thought and encourage introspection.
Parallel to my practice is a passion for government and international relations, as well as my multidisciplinary background in the humanities and environmental science. I aspire to make meaningful contributions to collective action problems, and I hold a strong conviction that an effective government should be composed of diverse individuals who bring a wide spectrum of perspectives, including artists!

Rachel Kamata, hailing from San Antonio, has pursued an eclectic mix of interests from a young age. She is a graduate of the Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (formerly KSAT), where she was an awardee in NASA's Student Launch Initiative program in 2016. That year also saw her join the MOSAIC program, an after-school initiative by The Contemporary that fuses artistic studio work with a practical understanding of art business and administration. This led her to contribute to significant public mural projects and participate in First Friday exhibitions. In 2019, a notable fast-food chain commissioned her through The Contemporary to produce "Light Fiber" for a city-wide public art illumination contest.
During her high school years at the International School of the Americas (ISA), Rachel's activities, such as Model United Nations, study abroad in Japan, and educational trips to various states, shaped her worldview. These experiences, alongside a comprehensive class research project conducted in Washington DC, spurred her fascination with politics and the humanities. Consequently, in 2020, she embarked on a higher education journey at the University of Rochester in New York, majoring in Visual Art and International Relations.
